Common Misconceptions

Is God Cruel?

Sunday, October 4, 2026 · with Jason

God is just and loving, and we can trust His goodness, even when life is hard to understand.

A common misconception about God is that He is cruel, especially when we experience suffering or see injustice in the world. However, Psalm 145:9 (NLT) reminds us that “The Lord is good to everyone. He showers compassion on all His creation.” God’s nature is rooted in love (1 John 4:8), and His justice, while sometimes difficult to comprehend, is always paired with mercy (Romans 5:8). This session will help students see that God’s justice is necessary to deal with sin, but He is not a distant or uncaring judge. Instead, He is intimately involved in His creation, working through suffering for His greater purposes (Romans 8:28). By understanding this balance between justice and love, students can trust God’s goodness even when life’s circumstances are hard to understand.
The Lord may not give us the relief we ask, but in the process, He gives us something better—His sustaining grace.

Psalm 145:9 highlights God’s universal goodness, showing His care for all creation. Theologically, God's goodness and love cannot be separated from His justice. His love motivates Him to act justly, ensuring that sin is addressed while offering redemption through Christ. 1 John 4:8 defines God as love—His very essence is to care, nurture, and redeem. When we consider the doctrine of God’s justice, Romans 5:8 provides a powerful picture of His mercy: while we were still sinners, God sent Christ to die for us. Systematic theology emphasizes that God’s justice demands the punishment of sin, but His mercy provides a way of reconciliation. Romans 8:28 further assures believers that God is sovereignly working through all things, including suffering, for the ultimate good of those who love Him. This doesn’t mean immediate comfort but rather an eternal plan for transformation, growth, and glory.
