Jeremiah 17:9

9The heart is more deceitful than anything else,

and incurable #— #who can understand it?

The human heart is indeed a factory of idols... it seeks to create, trust, and love things other than the Creator.

— John Calvin

The heart can lead us astray, but God’s wisdom offers true guidance and security.

1

The Heart is Deceptive

Supporting Scripture: Jeremiah 17:9

9The heart is more deceitful than anything else,

and incurable #— #who can understand it?

Summary: Scripture warns that the heart can lead us astray (Jeremiah 17:9). Our emotions are not always reliable guides.

Make your case for this point with the text. Use scripture, story, and direct application.

God’s Wisdom is Higher

Supporting Scripture: Proverbs 3:5-6

5Trust in the Lord with all your heart,

and do not rely on your own understanding;

6in all your ways know him,

and he will make your paths straight.

Summary: Instead of following our flawed desires, we are called to trust God’s wisdom (Proverbs 3:5-6) through prayer and Scripture.

Build on the previous point. Where does the text take us next?

A Renewed Heart in Christ

Supporting Scripture: Ezekiel 36:26

26I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you;  I will remove your heart of stone  and give you a heart of flesh.

Summary: Only when we surrender to Jesus can our hearts be transformed and aligned with God’s will (Ezekiel 36:26).

Bring the trajectory home. What's the final move in the argument?
Our hearts are not to be trusted on their own. Instead, we should seek God’s guidance and allow Him to transform our hearts.
